We’ve provided real-time updates regarding 2022 NBA Draft early entrant declarations up through the April 24th early entrant deadline, but what about the rest of the NBA Draft pool? Other draft candidates that need not declare early entrance (though dozens post about it anyways) are considered “auto-eligible”.

The rules regarding draft eligibility can be found within the Article X Section 1(b) of the 2017 NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement. There are a lot of nuances within these clauses (and a few more one-off triggers), but to simplify things, there are effectively four primary triggers of draft auto-eligibility:

1) Collegiate prospect who fully exhausts their college eligibility

Example: Collin Gillespie | Villanova

2) International prospect who turns 22 years old in the calendar year of a given NBA Draft

Example: Olek Balcerowski | Mega Basket

3) Prep-to-pro prospect who is at least 19 years of age in the calendar year of a given NBA Draft and at least one NBA season removed from high school graduation

Example: Dom Barlow | Overtime Elite

4) Prospect who leaves college with eligibility remaining, does not file for early entrance, and signs/plays professionally

Example: Alessandro Lever | Grand Canyon → Pallacanestro Trieste

Triggers 1 and 2 are your more standard, run-of-the-mill auto-eligible draft candidates. The population of players that fall into these categories is very, very large (many of whom are not relevant prospects). As such, it’s not practical (or worthwhile) to build a fully exhaustive list of all these players.

I’ll attempt to include the prospects in these standard categories who have even an inkling of draft/overseas buzz per the Rookie Scale consensus prospect ranking algorithm and/or those for whom I have clarity on their agency situation.

Triggers 3 and 4 are the more interesting auto-eligible prospect cases, which are a bit more complicated to track. Trigger 4 particularly has a much higher volume of prospects this year as a result of the necessity of traditional four-year seniors to declare as early entrants last year (and for the next 4 or so drafts). Through a combination of confusion and indifference, many prospects with a remaining year of eligibility kicked off their pro careers in the G League and abroad without declaring as early entrants for the 2021 NBA Draft. I’ll include as many of these as I’m able to verify.

In compiling this list of auto-eligible prospects, there were a few names that required a bit more digging and due diligence to fully grasp their auto-eligibility case. Let’s run through a few of the more unique cases:

Barra Njie | Delaware Blue Coats

This is a fascinating case. Njie, a Swedish prospect, played high school ball in the United States at Saint Benedict’s (NJ). Rather than playing collegiately, Njie opted to play for Fryshuset in the Swedish Basketligan for the 2020-21 season, where he was named Rookie of the Year. Njie went on to test the 2021 NBA Draft waters, ultimately choosing to withdraw. He subsequently entered the NBA G League Draft where he was selected by the Delaware Blue Coats and went on to appear in 15 games with them in the 2021-22 season.

So why is he considered auto-eligible now? Why was his auto-eligibility not triggered last year?

Njie appeared in his first game for Fryshuset on January 8th, 2021, just one week following the cut-off for 2021 NBA Draft auto-eligibility.

A close call here, especially given the vagueness of “rendered services” (do practices and other team activities from contract signature until first stepping on the court of a game count?). This is also a bit murkier given Njie’s international roots and United States high school basketball / graduation consideration. But ultimately, 2022 NBA Draft auto-eligibility appears to be appropriate in accordance with the CBA.

Rapolas Ivanauskas | Prienai

Despite playing his final collegiate game for Cincinnati in December of 2020 and playing professionally in Lithuania for the remainder of the 2020-21 season, Ivanauskas’ auto-eligibility is just triggering now. This is for a similar reason to Njie in that Ivanauskas didn’t play for Prienai until January 30, 2021, a month following the cut-off outlined above.

Keith Williams | Western Kentucky

The Keith Williams case is is a fascinating one. Williams, who previously played at Cincinnati, tested both the 2020 and 2021 NBA Draft waters, withdrawing in both instances. While testing the 2021 NBA Draft waters, Williams signed with agent and partook in some pre-draft events. After withdrawing, Williams opted to transfer to Western Kentucky as a graduate transfer, but his eligibility appeal was denied by the NCAA and he was unable to play a game this season.

My interpretation of this situation is that, assuming the eligibility appeal denial means his NCAA eligibility is now fully exhausted, Williams would be considered auto-eligible based on this CBA clause:

Certainly a weird situation. In late April of 2022, Williams signed with the Otago Nuggets in New Zealand, effectively setting himself up as a “pre-stash” option.

Pedro Bradshaw | Fort Wayne Mad Ants

Bradshaw declared for the 2021 NBA Draft as a redshirt junior at Bellarmine. Per a memo from
NBA Communications on July 20, 2021, he was among the population of players who remained as 2021 NBA Draft early entrants and did not withdraw.

Bradshaw went on to be selected by the Salt Lake City Stars in the NBA G League Draft and has made appearances for the Sioux Fall Skyforce, Iowa Wolves, and Fort Wayne Mad Ants throughout the 2021-22 NBA G League season.

I have included Bradshaw as he was noted as auto-eligible in a memo sent out to NBA front offices. Per the detail outlined above, I would not interpret him as being auto-eligible for the 2022 NBA Draft, but simply as having gone undrafted in the 2021 NBA Draft.

Perhaps his withdrawal request was subsequently accepted after the NBA Communications memo was sent out and wasn’t addressed publicly? This remains unclear.
